Seth Hain, who led AI efforts at Epic, is leaving the EHR giant as part of a broader executive exodus, according to a report from Second Opinion.
His departure follows that of Epic President Sumit Rana, who announced July 3 he would step down Aug. 14 after more than two decades with the company.
Three other longtime Epic employees have also recently left or are planning to leave.
Dave Fuhrmann, a senior vice president of research and development who oversees Epic’s Care Everywhere health information exchange, will also leave soon; Trevor Berceau, also in research and development, will take over managing Care Everywhere, according to the July 18 report from Second Opinion, a health tech news outlet.
Drew McCombs, Epic’s former vice president of Nebula Cloud Platform, Cogito Analytics and AI, departed in January after nearly 20 years to become chief technology officer and chief information security officer at fintech company Cylerity. Mark Morris, a two-decade veteran and team leader in technical services, announced his exit this week.
An Epic spokesperson declined to discuss the departures. “Epic does not comment on personnel,” the spokesperson told Becker’s. Mr. Hain also declined to comment to Becker’s, while Mr. Fuhrmann has not responded to a request for comment.
Mr. Hain and Mr. Rana were both closely involved in building Epic’s Curiosity AI tool, developed on the Cosmos dataset of more than 300 million patient records from roughly 50,000 clinics, and in launching the company’s AI Trust and Assurance Suite in 2024. Industry observers had long speculated that Mr. Rana, as the second-in-command, was in line to replace Epic founder and CEO Judy Faulkner, 82, who has declared her successor must be a longtime Epic employee and software developer.
The departures come weeks before Epic’s Users Group Meeting, set for Aug. 17-20, where the company’s next AI and leadership priorities will be closely watched.
