THE BRONX, N.Y. (PIX11) — Con Edison performed emergency power shut-offs in Riverdale on the hottest day of the year so far.
Ahead of the triple-digit day in New York City, the energy company pleaded with New Yorkers to keep energy use to a minimum, including limiting air conditioner usage.
As of 7 p.m., nearly 31,000 customers had their service restored since the heat wave began, according to Con Edison. Around 16,000 customers in the five boroughs are still without power.
Thursday morning, ConEd dropped voltage by 8% in northern Manhattan and the northwest part of the Bronx. Just before 6 p.m., voltage was dropped in northern Queens and part of Staten Island as well. According to the company, it’s done to “help keep power flowing reliably.”
Con Edison shut off the power in Riverdale sometime Thursday afternoon “due to an electrical problem,” saying it would prevent more outages from occurring.
In the afternoon, the Bronx had over 5,900 reported customers without power. Just before 6 p.m., that number dropped to 3,223.
Here’s how many customers were without power in New York City as of 7 p.m, according to Con Edison:
- Bronx: 5,000 customers
- Queens: 6,000 customers
- Staten Island: 5,000 customers
