(NEXSTAR) – Even the price of “Freedom Fuel” is subject to fluctuations, it seems.
The White House on Tuesday touted the debut of the “ Freedom Fuel Network” of gas stations in a post on social platform X, stating that prices at Freedom Fuel pumps had been lowered to $3.47 per gallon in honor of “our 47th President.”
The same post also linked the Freedom Fuel Network to President Trump, claiming he was “leading the charge to lower gas prices this summer — putting more money in your pocket.” But the White House has since claimed that the Trump administration is not behind the Freedom Fuel Network and is not subsidizing its prices.
No matter who is operating the stations, however, it appears that the previously advertised price of $3.47 is not as feasible as it was once promised.

GasBuddy, an app and online tracking resource for gas prices, has recorded prices of at least $3.57 per gallon at the majority of Freedom Fuel’s 25 locations as of Friday morning, according to its Gas Price Map tool.
Videos and images posted by social media users in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, where the stations operate, also appear to show similar $3.57-per-gallon prices.
Several of the locations’ prices were unavailable, though none of those tracked by GasBuddy were offering gas at the original price of $3.47 per gallon.
While higher than initially advertised, at least one Freedom Fuel location’s prices had reportedly fallen dramatically since Wednesday, when GasBuddy found a New Jersey station to be offering a gallon for $3.89 on Wednesday, according to data analyzed by USA Today. The same station on Friday morning was charging $3.57, per GasBuddy data.
Freedom Fuel’s stations, however, were still generally cheaper than other nearby gas stations, according to the GasBuddy map.

Critics of the Freedom Fuel model have questioned where the subsidies are coming from, seeing as experts have claimed the stations must be taking a loss, based on the current price of oil. Tom Kloza, an energy advisor for Gulf, told The New York Times that these kinds of promotions are unsustainable, and “the period where one sells at the disadvantaged prices is measured in hours and not days or weeks.”
Others have likened the idea behind the Freedom Fuel stations to socialism, despite the White House denying being behind the network. And there were plenty who blamed the Trump administration and its war with Iran on the rising gas prices, which were well under $3.47 nationally a year ago, according to AAA data.
Some of the drivers in the area, meanwhile, were appreciative of the lower pump prices. Steve Wyrenski, a customer at a Pennsylvania Freedom Fuel station earlier this week, told the Associated Press that lower gas prices were a “godsend” for his business’ bottom line, but reiterated that he was no fan of Trump.
“I don’t support his policies,” he said of Trump. “I think he’s caused a lot of the problems that this country’s having.”
When asked, a White House representative told a CBS affiliate in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, that prices at the Freedom Fuel stations would continue to “fluctuate.”
“The prices at the gas stations will fluctuate — possibly coming down even further — depending on the market and the location, given some are located in Pennsylvania and New Jersey,” the spokesperson said.
