In early July, 10-ounce bags of GreenWise Blueberries were recalled after being linked to an E. coli outbreak. Now, the recall has expanded to cover all sizes of GreenWise Blueberries and GreenWise Organic Whole Mixed Berries.

If you have these berries in your freezer, don’t assume they’re safe just because they’ve been frozen. Freezing fruit to 0°F only pauses the growth of E. coli—it doesn’t kill the bacteria.

What You Need to Know About the Expanded Recall

In an announcement published on July 6, Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur S.A., a Chilean exporter, recalled GreenWise Organic Whole Blueberries sold in 10-ounce bags. The blueberries were distributed to Publix stores in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. Then, on July 29, more than three weeks later, Publix announced a recall of all GreenWise Organic Whole Blueberries and Whole Mixed Berries.

So far, we know 12 people have fallen ill with E. coli, and four of them have been hospitalized. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has officially linked this outbreak to blueberries.

Publix pulled all frozen GreenWise Organic Whole Blueberries and Whole Mixed Berries from its freezer aisles at the end of June, but products purchased before then could be in shoppers’ freezers.

What To Do With Recalled Products

Do not eat any recalled GreenWise blueberries or mixed berries. Instead, throw the fruit out or bring the bag back to Publix for a refund. To ask further questions, contact Publix Customer Care. The company can be reached at 800-242-1227 from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Eastern time, Monday through Friday.

E. coli may cause stomach cramps, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and fever, EatingWell explains. If you feel sick after eating blueberries or mixed berries, contact your healthcare provider.
