West Marine, the nation’s largest boating retailer, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on May 17 and confirmed plans to close 59 stores across the country as the company attempts to restructure its operations.
The company submitted its petition in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware, pointing to supply chain disruptions, extreme weather events and a significant shift in consumer behavior as primary drivers of the financial restructuring, according to court records.
West Marine plans to use the bankruptcy process to strengthen its balance sheet, reduce debt and improve financial flexibility.

The bankruptcy comes as the recreational boating industry experiences a downturn following record growth during the pandemic.
New boat retail unit sales dropped 8.8% in 2025 as elevated interest rates and inflation affected discretionary spending, according to data from the National Marine Manufacturers Association.
While boats priced under $50,000 saw sales increase 8.7%, the luxury segment between $100,000 and $200,000 declined 14.3%.
West Marine indicated it continues to analyze its store portfolio and may identify additional locations for closure.
A consulting agreement with Hilco Global suggests as many as 95 stores could ultimately close as part of the restructuring effort, according to The Street.
