(NEXSTAR) — The confirmed number of cyclosporiasis cases linked to the ongoing outbreak impacting at least five states has now climbed into the thousands, with officials warning the true number of cases could be higher than 11,000.

In an update, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that 4,173 cases across 41 states have been linked to the outbreak. On Monday, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration confirmed five separate clusters of illnesses were under investigation, one of which is linked to Taylor Farms lettuce.

The FDA also maintains that while dozens of states are impacted, the outbreak investigation has been linked to “at least” five states: Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, West Virginia and Kentucky.

“Many of the additional cases have been reported by Michigan and Ohio,” the CDC said in its latest update. Those states comprise the bulk of the more than 12,000 cases of cyclosporiasis health officials across the country have reported so far this year.

Cases of cyclosporiasis are typically reported between May and August each year, but usually, cases total only a handful or a few dozen. Michigan, for example, sees about 50 confirmed cases annually.

As of Wednesday, the state’s case count has reached 7,171. That’s up more than 1,000 since Monday.

Other states to see a spike in cyclosporiasis cases recently include North Carolina and Indiana, which now have more than 500 cases, and Kansas, which has more than 280 cases.

A Nexstar analysis of CDC and state health data, as well as local reporting, shows that nearly every state has reported at least one case of cyclosporiasis this year:

In some states, the cases of cyclosporiasis have not been linked to the ongoing outbreak. Utah health officials previously reported that a resident diagnosed with an infection has no connection to the outbreak.

In Hawaii, there have not been any cases of locally acquired cyclosporiasis in the last decade. Last week, state health officials said a traveler “from a state that has reported recent cases of the illness” was confirmed to have cyclosporiasis, but an investigation showed it was not acquired in Hawaii.

All but nine states have confirmed cases linked to the federal outbreak investigation: Delaware, Hawaii, Maine, Montana, New Mexico, Oregon, South Carolina, South Dakota and Vermont. There could, however, be residents within these states who became ill.

While the symptoms are serious, not everyone requires hospitalization or seeks testing to confirm they have cyclosporiasis. Because of this, the true number of cyclosporiasis cases is likely to be underreported.

In 47 states, the District of Columbia and New York City, cyclosporiasis is considered a nationally notifiable condition.
