Palantir Technologies ( NASDAQ:PLTR) shares surged about 30% on Tuesday, wiping out roughly $3 billion in paper gains accumulated by investors betting against the stock, according to data from Bloomberg.
The move followed Palantir's latest earnings update, which prompted a sharp reversal in positioning among short sellers. Before the rally, bearish investors had built about $2.7 billion in mark-to-market gains for 2026.
Palantir remains down roughly 10% for the year despite Tuesday's advance, leaving the stock on track for its weakest annual performance since 2022. The recent rebound also represents its strongest one-day gain in about two years.
The latest move highlights the risks facing investors holding short positions as Palantir's earnings outlook improves.
For the company, the rally may increase investor attention and reduce pressure from bearish positioning, although the stock's broader 2026 performance remains negative.
