GREENWOOD, Ind. – Hoosiers may not have to travel far to visit Buc-ee’s.

The massively popular Texas-based travel center chain is targeting Greenwood for its first Indiana location. Documents filed with the Greenwood Advisory Plan Commission confirmed the company’s plans.

Word of Buc-ee’s interest in Johnson County first surfaced in November via a report in the Indianapolis Business Journal.

The company seeks to rezone an 80-acre stretch at Worthsville Road and I-65 for industrial and commercial use. The area is currently zoned for agricultural and residential purposes.

Under the proposal, Buc-ee’s would develop 37 acres of the site for a 74,000-square-foot travel center. The plans call for a regional drainage facility, public street improvements, walking trails, green areas and connections to Greenwood’s trail system.

The travel center would include 120 fueling stations and electric vehicle (EV) charging stations.

Buc-ee’s has 55 travel centers in a dozen states, with 36 of them in Texas. The closest locations to Indianapolis are in Huber Heights, Ohio (about 105 miles away), and Richmond, Kentucky (about 220 miles away).

It’s known for the massive size of its travel centers, as well as the ubiquitous cartoon beaver featured prominently on signs and merchandise. The chain prides itself on clean, roomy bathrooms and an array of its own branded snacks, ready-to-eat food and candy.

Mayor Mark Myers told the IBJ that plans for a Greenwood travel center have been in the works for about three years, with city officials engaged in negotiations with representatives from Buc-ee’s. The Worthsville Road and I-65 site emerged as the preferred location for both groups.

The chain may not be finished with Indiana. The IBJ also reported that Buc-ee’s is exploring a potential site in Whitestown for Indiana’s second travel center.
