Just two months after it appeared that a once-popular California-Nevada border hotel and gambling destination along the way to Las Vegas would become a ghost town, the Primm properties along the 15 Freeway are getting a second chance.

The Primm family, which owns Primm Valley Casino Resorts, Buffalo Bill’s Resort & Casino, Whiskey Pete’s Hotel & Casino, and the surrounding fuel and convenience stores, signed a deal in June with Las Vegas-based Terrible’s to take over operations of the properties and keep them open, according to a Business Wire news release.

“Primm has long been one of Nevada’s most recognizable destinations,” Terrible’s President Tim Herbst said in the release. “This partnership reflects our commitment to preserving that legacy while creating new opportunities for growth, investment and tourism for decades to come. We believe Primm’s best days are still ahead.”

The deal came just weeks before the Primm family planned to close all its border town properties.

On May 6, news broke that previous operator Affinity Gaming and Z Capital had sent letters to employees asking them to vacate their housing by July 6, two days after the planned July 4 closure of all properties.

“We recognize this is an extraordinarily difficult time and we are deeply grateful for the dedication each of you has brought to the Primm Valley Casino Resorts property,” the company said in the notice of termination obtained by KLAS. “However, due to the upcoming end of all operations at Primm Valley Casino Resorts, including this apartment complex, this letter shall serve as formal notice of termination of your apartment lease agreement.”

The news led to proposals from at least two companies to keep the area open to travelers.

In late May, The Nevada Independent reported that a Las Vegas-based truck stop owner, LV Petroleum, had proposed taking over “the whole exit” along Interstate 15.

Although that proposal did not pan out, a deal was reached with Terrible’s, which took over full operations of the properties on Sunday. In the days before the transition, shelves were nearly bare at the Primm Food Center, but on July 1, crews began restocking inventory inside the convenience store.

Terrible’s also announced it retained approximately 300 employees and is preparing to reopen Primm Valley Casino in the coming weeks, according to KLAS.

“Future plans may include property renovations, upgraded traveler amenities, enhanced food and beverage offerings, infrastructure improvements and other investments designed to elevate the visitor experience while preserving Primm’s unique identity,” the June news release stated. “As plans move forward, additional details regarding future developments and investments will be announced.”
