(NEXSTAR) – Salmonella cases across 17 states have been linked to millions of recalled eggs, though federal investigators say other sources may be to blame.
Nearly 1.6 million cartons of white and cage-free brown eggs produced in Texas were recalled last week over concerns of possible salmonella contamination. The eggs were sold at Kroger stores in Texas and Louisiana; Brookshire Grocery stores in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico and Mississippi, and to foodservice and retailer customers in Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration have since linked an ongoing salmonella outbreak that has sickened dozens of people to the recalled eggs.
Cases, however, are appearing in states far from where the eggs were distributed.
At least 98 fall ill in salmonella outbreak
As of Friday, 98 cases of illness had been linked to the salmonella outbreak, though the true number of people who have fallen ill is likely much higher, according to the CDC. Like the ongoing cyclosporiasis outbreaks, some may become sick and recover on their own without requiring medical care or undergoing testing to identify the cause of their illness.
At least 26 of those who have become ill with salmonella required hospitalization, the CDC’s latest data shows. The ages of all 98 who have become ill range from younger than a year old to 81.
The state with the most cases is Texas, where the eggs were produced, while the furthest-away cases have been reported in Michigan and New York.

The FDA noted that at least one illness was reported in late November, and the most recent was on June 30. There have been no reported deaths linked to this salmonella outbreak.
The agency also said that while the recalled eggs were “identified as a common egg source” among those who fell ill, the egg producer “does not account for all the illnesses in this outbreak.”
“Additional investigation is ongoing to determine if there are other sources of illness,” the FDA added.
What to know about salmonella
Salmonella infections are commonly associated with diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps, according to the CDC. Symptoms can begin between six hours and six days after you’ve ingested the bacteria. Most people are able to recover without receiving treatment within four to seven days.
Illnesses may be more severe for young children, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems. Some may require medical treatment or hospitalization, the CDC explains.
More severe illness linked to salmonella can include arterial infections, endocarditis (an infection in the heart) and arthritis.
Every year, salmonella causes roughly 1.35 million illnesses and 420 deaths.
