Social Security won’t issue some payments in August. But a missing payment doesn’t mean missing money.
Supplemental Security Income, payments made to low-income seniors and people with disabilities or blindness, is typically paid on the first of each month. That’s what took place on July 1 but won’t happen on Aug. 1. Instead, some 7 million SSI recipients will be paid on July 31.
That means SSI recipients will get two payments in July and none in August.

The reason for the change has to do with the days of the week.
Social Security doesn’t issue payments on holidays or weekends. Since Aug. 1 falls on a Saturday, the payments are pushed back to the closest Friday – July 31. The schedule will get back to normal in September since the first of the month falls on a Tuesday.

There are other schedule changes in the year: Nov. 1 is a Sunday, so the payment will be issued Oct. 30. SSI payments will also be made on Dec. 1 and then again on Dec. 31 since Jan. 1, 2027 is a federal holiday.
The schedule for regular Social Security payments doesn’t change. People born between the 1st and the 10th are paid on the second Wednesday of the month. People with birthdays between the 11th and the 20th are paid on the third Wednesday and those with birthdays from the 21st to the 31st are paid on the fourth Wednesday.
There’s another schedule for people who began receiving Social Security before May 1997 or who receive both Social Security and SSI. In those cases, Social Security is paid on the third of the month and SSI on the first.
