Stock Market Today: Chip Stocks Recover, Lifting Nasdaq
Oil rises amid more fighting in Mideast
U.S. stock indexes are advancing, helped by a recovery in chip stocks, as investors gear up for earnings from some of America's biggest tech companies.
The S&P 500 and Nasdaq composite have flatlined in recent weeks. Hostilities in the Middle East, higher oil prices and powerful new Chinese artificial-intelligence models have dampened the enthusiasm that previously powered months of gains.
The Nasdaq is up about 1.4% today, followed by the S&P and the Dow industrials, which added nearly 500 points, or 0.9%. Tomorrow will bring earnings from Alphabet, Tesla and IBM.
Oil prices are advancing after more fighting in the Middle East overnight. Front-month Brent crude futures settled at their highest level since mid-June yesterday. Treasury yields are also moving higher, as investor fears of rising inflation build.
