Kenect Acquires AI Startup ShelVey for $9.2 Million as Business Texting Platform Expands Into Automation

PLEASANT GROVE, Utah — Kenect, a business texting platform that has built a reputation helping automotive dealerships and law firms communicate with customers, announced Monday that it would acquire ShelVey, an artificial intelligence automation company, for $9.2 million in an all-cash deal.

The acquisition, which is expected to close by early April, represents a strategic pivot for Kenect as it seeks to expand beyond simple text messaging into sophisticated AI-driven automation — a shift that underscores how rapidly artificial intelligence is reshaping the business communication landscape.

"ShelVey's advanced AI automation technology represents a transformational opportunity for Kenect," said Shaun Sorensen, the chief executive and co-founder of Kenect, in an interview. "This acquisition will enable us to accelerate innovation in business communication and customer engagement across automotive, legal, and other service industries."

The deal comes at a moment when businesses across sectors are racing to integrate AI capabilities into their operations, driven by advances in large language models and automation technology. According to a recent report by McKinsey & Company, companies that have adopted AI report productivity gains of up to 40 percent in certain business functions.

A Strategic Bet on AI

For Kenect, which was founded by Mr. Sorensen and has grown to serve thousands of businesses across North America, the acquisition of ShelVey marks its most significant expansion into artificial intelligence. The company's existing platform allows businesses to send and receive text messages with customers — a service that has become increasingly important as consumers show a preference for text-based communication over phone calls.

But as competitors enter the market and customer expectations evolve, Kenect executives believe AI automation will be critical to staying ahead.

ShelVey, a Delaware limited liability company formed in November 2024, has developed what its founders describe as enterprise-grade AI automation technology. The platform uses proprietary algorithms to handle complex customer interactions, process data, and execute tasks that would typically require human intervention.

"We are excited to join forces with Kenect and integrate our AI automation capabilities into their established platform," said Vikram Varma Sangaraju, the director of ShelVey. "This acquisition validates our technology and vision, and we look forward to reaching a broader customer base through Kenect's extensive market presence."

What Kenect Is Buying

The $9.2 million purchase price will give Kenect control of ShelVey's complete technology stack, including its proprietary source code, intellectual property rights, customer databases, and technical infrastructure. The deal also includes all domain registrations, technical documentation, and existing customer contracts.

Industry analysts say the valuation reflects both the strategic importance of AI capabilities and the premium that established companies are willing to pay to acquire talent and technology in the field.

"We're seeing a pattern where traditional software companies are buying AI startups not just for the technology, but for the expertise," said Thomas Chen, a technology analyst at Gartner. "The knowledge of how to build and deploy these systems is as valuable as the systems themselves."

The Broader Industry Context

The acquisition is part of a broader consolidation trend in the business communication sector, where companies are seeking to offer more comprehensive solutions rather than point products. Twilio, RingCentral, and other major players in the space have similarly pursued acquisitions to expand their capabilities.

The global business communication platform market is projected to reach $78 billion by 2028, according to industry research, with AI-powered features representing the fastest-growing segment. As businesses increasingly adopt remote and hybrid work models, the demand for sophisticated communication tools has accelerated.

For Kenect's customers — which include automotive dealerships that use the platform to schedule service appointments and legal practices that use it to communicate with clients — the addition of AI automation could mean more sophisticated interactions without additional staffing.

"The opportunity is to take routine tasks that currently require a human response and automate them intelligently," Mr. Sorensen said. "But we're not talking about simple chatbots. This is about AI that can understand context, handle complex queries, and actually solve problems."

Regulatory Scrutiny and Market Dynamics

The deal is subject to regulatory approval, including review by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States. While such reviews are standard for technology acquisitions, they have become more rigorous in recent years as policymakers have grown concerned about foreign access to AI technology and customer data.

Legal experts say the relatively modest size of the transaction and ShelVey's domestic registration should facilitate a smooth approval process, though the companies have agreed to a 60-day exclusivity period during which regulatory and due diligence reviews will take place.

The acquisition also includes provisions typical of technology deals, including non-compete agreements that will prevent ShelVey's principals from launching competing businesses for three years, and a 90-day transition period during which the ShelVey team will help integrate the technology and train Kenect's staff.

Questions About Integration

While the strategic rationale for the deal appears sound, technology acquisitions often face challenges in execution. Industry observers will be watching to see how effectively Kenect can integrate ShelVey's AI capabilities into its existing platform without disrupting service to current customers.

"The hard part isn't buying the technology — it's actually making it work with your existing systems and delivering value to customers," said Rebecca Martinez, a venture capital investor who focuses on enterprise software. "We've seen plenty of acquisitions that looked great on paper but struggled with integration."

Mr. Sorensen acknowledged those challenges but expressed confidence in the companies' compatibility. "We've done extensive technical due diligence, and we're confident that the integration will be smooth," he said. "More importantly, our cultures are aligned around serving customers and solving real business problems."

Looking Ahead

For ShelVey's small team, the acquisition represents validation of their approach to AI automation and an opportunity to scale beyond what would be possible as an independent startup.

For Kenect, it's a bet that AI will fundamentally transform business communication — and that companies that move quickly to integrate these capabilities will have a significant advantage over those that wait.

The transaction is expected to close on April 5, following completion of due diligence and receipt of regulatory approvals. Both companies said they would maintain their existing customer commitments during the transition.

As businesses continue to explore how AI can improve efficiency and customer experience, deals like this one suggest that the market for AI technology remains robust — and that established companies are willing to pay significant premiums to acquire capabilities they see as essential to their future.
